Job Description

American Traveler is seeking a Med/Surg RN for night shifts in a Level II trauma center requiring recent trauma, surgical, or med/surg experience and AL or compact RN licensure.

Responsibilities

  • Position is based in a hospital setting, rotating across multiple med/surg units including trauma surgical, neuroscience, oncology, clinical decision, orthopedics, and urology
  • Units include 6 North Trauma Surgical, 5 South Neuroscience, 5 North MedSurg/Oncology, 4 South Clinical Decision Unit, 3 South Orthopedics, and 3 North MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient ratios generally range from 1:5 to 1:6
  • Patient populations include general surgery, vascular, trauma, neuro, ortho, oncology, urology, med/surg, and critical care overflow
  • Technology and equipment include Cerner EMR (preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell, and Spacelabs monitors
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00pm - 7:00am), part of a 4-week schedule cycle
  • Required to work every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • Holiday coverage required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Floating is required to like units and patient care areas
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • Team support includes CNAs, charge nurses, phlebotomy, IV team, and hospitalists
  • Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom and 24 hours on the unit for new or returning travelers who have been away 1+ years
  • Required to work various patient populations with specialized skills such as wound care, trach care, chest tubes, orthopedic care, oncology, and neuro cases
  • RNs are supported by telemetry techs but are required to interpret strips regularly
  • Perm staff must wait six months after last shift before returning as a traveler
  • Maximum of 7 approved days off, excluding specified blackout dates
  • No self-scheduling; schedules are determined using Smart Square
  • Scrub color is flexible; any color is permitted

Requirements

  • Active AL or compact RN license
  • Minimum of 18 months recent Med/Surg and/or ICU experience
  • At least 1 year of trauma or surgical experience required for specific units
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications
  • Experience with wound care, IV skills, chest tubes, NGT, medication administration, and documentation
  • Experience with Cerner or Epic EMR required; Cerner required for candidates with ICU-only background
  • Ability to interpret and confirm telemetry strips every 4 hours
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Candidates must live more than 60 miles from the facility
