Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position in a Level 1 Trauma setting requiring EVD and strong neuro assessment skills.
Responsibilities
- Work in a 32-bed Neuro ICU within an acute care hospital
- Level 1 Trauma environment with a focus on critically ill neuro patients
- Common patient cases include craniotomies, brain tumor removal and ablations, brain biopsies, spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
- Night shift position with 12-hour shifts (7pm-7am)
- Must work 4 weekend shifts every 4 weeks and 2 of 4 major holidays
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 in ICU; may float to Tele floors with 4:1 ratio
- Required to float between all ICU and Telemetry units as first to float
- Charting conducted in Cerner EMR
- Use of Phillips monitors for telemetry; ventilator experience required
- Charge nurse support available without patient assignments
- 24/7 respiratory therapy and pharmacy support onsite
- SIMs Lab skills assessment required for Foley catheter insertion and (except in Neuro ICU) central line dressing changes
- Responsibilities include comprehensive neuro assessment, critical care management, and maintaining competency in sterile technique for catheter and dressing changes
- Must maintain natural hair color and have no facial piercings; steel grey scrubs required for Neuro floors
- Men must be clean shaven for fit testing
- Testing and competency assessments are pass/fail with two attempts allowed; failure results in ineligibility for 6 months
- Can be placed on standby for scheduled shifts as needed
- All travelers are expected to be flexible with floating and assisting where needed
- Returning candidates cannot have been employed by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility in the past year
Requirements
- Active AZ or compact RN license required at time of consideration
- Minimum of 2 years recent ICU RN experience in a large (450+ beds) hospital
- Prior Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Previous travel nursing experience (minimum 3-6 months); first-time travelers not considered
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Experience with EVD, ICP monitoring, and strong neuro assessment skills required
- Must pass pre-employment DYS (dysrhythmia) exam and a sterile technique skills assessment on day one
- Ability to float between ICU and Tele units as assigned
- Must provide two references: one supervisor from the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from the last 3 years
- Must reside at least 50 miles from facility as determined by driver’s license
