Unit Overview
  • Unit Name/Type: ED (Unit 2007010) – Level I Trauma Center
  • Location: Orange, CA
  • Beds: 30
  • Patients: Neonates through 25 years old (pediatric & young adult)
  • Patient Volume: ~116,000 annually; winter avg >400/day (very high volume)
  • Unit Style: No designated holding unit, includes fast track, 3–5 triage areas
  • Special Notes: Never diverts patients; ED techs assigned (approx. 1 per nurse, 2–3 in triage)
Staffing & Ratios
  • Traveler Requirement: Minimum 2 years ED experience
  • Float: Yes (as needed)
  • Charge Experience: Preferred
  • Schedule: 12-hour shifts (07:00–19:30 / 19:00–07:30) + some 8/10 hr availability
  • Weekends: Coverage varies per contract (every other or every third)
  • Scheduling: Block/self/other; time-off requests extend contract
Orientation

Systems & Support

  • Support Services: Pharmacy, respiratory, radiology, PT, social services, transport, RRT, child life specialists (draw their own blood)
Patient Population & Diagnoses
  • High Acuity + Trauma: Multisystem trauma, shock, penetrating trauma, traumatic brain injuries, burns, amputations, etc.
  • Medical/Neuro: Sepsis, meningitis, febrile seizures, encephalitis, near drowning, overdose/withdrawal, acute psychosis, sexual assault, OB/GYN emergencies
  • Respiratory: Pneumonia, respiratory failure, asthma, croup, COVID, chest tube management, ventilated patients
  • Other: Abdominal pain, poison ingestion, fractures/casting, Kawasaki disease, hematology/oncology patients, neutropenic precautions
Skills & Certifications
  • Required: BLS, PALS, ACLS
  • Preferred/Required depending on assignment: CPI/MAB, NIHSS, NRP
  • Critical Skills:
    • Triage, code management, restraints, abuse reporting
    • IV therapy, blood products, central line care
    • Pediatric dosage calculations, sedation, vasopressors
    • Dysrhythmia interpretation & management
    • Trauma scale/Glasgow coma scoring
    • ED psych crisis management
Traveler Information
  • Experience Required: At least 2 years in ED; Level I trauma experience preferred
  • First-Time Traveler Accepted: No
  • Other Notes: Seasonal staffing needs peak in winter → strong demand for travelers
