Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 12-hour day shift PCU position on an Ortho Neuro Surgical unit, requiring a compact or SD RN license and expertise with mixed acuity patients.
Responsibilities
- Position is within the Ortho Neuro Surgical (ONS) unit in a hospital PCU setting
- Mixed acuity unit caring for intermediate/stepdown, telemetry, and MedSurg patients
- Primary patient populations include post-surgical (urology, abdominal, ortho trauma, neuro/spine) and general medical cases
- Common cases include total joint replacements, neurovascular interventions, seizures, brain tumors, spinal surgeries, and medical conditions such as CHF, pneumonia, and renal failure
- Unit consists of 64 beds across two floors with pods staffed by 2 RNs and 1 nurse aide for every 8 patients
- RN patient ratio is 1:4 for all assignments
- Utilizes Epic for charting, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell systems (Epic experience required)
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week, with weekend rotation (up to 4 of 6 weekends per schedule assigned)
- Orientation includes 2 days of classroom/online learning and 2 unit preceptor shifts
- Floating may be required to other adult inpatient units based on staffing needs
- Deliver nursing care to a diverse patient population, including surgical, orthopedic, neurological, and complex medical cases
- Work within a supportive pod structure with charge nurses, CNAs, flex nurses, and resource nurse support available
- Post neuro-intervention experience preferred, with unit education and support provided if needed
- Must adhere to navy blue scrub dress code
- Free parking provided on site
- Holiday time off requests must be made prior to offer, with blackout dates from August 1-18 annually
- Monthly audits require at least 90% compliance for pre/post pain scoring
- No required on-call shifts, but optional as additional shifts when available
- First-time travelers with required experience and Epic proficiency are welcome
Requirements
- Active SD or compact RN license required
- Minimum of 1 year recent experience as an intermediate/stepdown level RN
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Completion of a board-approved nursing education program
- Epic EMR experience required, especially for first-time travelers
- Proficiency in intermediate/stepdown care including cardiac strip interpretation, chest tubes, trach care (no fresh traches), NGT and tube feedings, JP drains, PICC/Midline/CVL/PIV management, wound care, TPN, blood transfusions, and urinary/fecal device management
- Experience in drip titration for Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed up to 5 mcg (training provided for other drips if needed)
- Must be comfortable with MedSurg assignments as required
- Applicants must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
- Former permanent staff must wait one year before consideration as a traveler
