Infection Preventionist RN

Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for overseeing the facility’s Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP), which is designed to provide a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment while preventing the development and transmission of communicable diseases and infections. Under limited supervision, the IP reports to the Director of Nursing and collaborates with the Medical Director for Antimicrobial Stewardship and other key stakeholders to develop a system of care that promotes sound, evidence-based infection prevention principles and practices. In addition,  the IP is responsible for addressing the nursing needs of residents while actively incorporating the community’s “Philosophy for Person-Directed Care.”

Job Category – Regular Full-Time

Schedule - Day Shift w/occasional evenings & weekends as needed. 

Pay rate: 

$44.50 - $54.79 per hour, DOE

+ Shift pay differentials (Evenings = $1.00) (NOC = $2.00)

To be successful in the role, you would have:

• Current RN in the state for which applying
• Clinical observation and assessment skills
• Minimum of two years of nursing experience or one year as a nursing supervisor
• Must meet currently or have completed national training requirements for Infection Prevention and Control within the first 12 months of hire
• Maintain Current Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations, ensure facility leaders are informed of appropriate issue; understand and comply with infection control safety and OSHA procedures and regulations.

Work Duties

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. 

• The primary duty of the IP is to plan, organize, develop, coordinate, and direct the infection prevention and control program and its activities in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern such programs. To coordinate and collaborate with the Administrator, Director of Nursing and the Infection Prevention and Control Committee to ensure that an effective infection prevention and control program is maintained at all times.
• Collaborate with Facility Leadership and the Medical Director to develop, implement and evaluate annual infection prevention goals and action plans annually.
• Conduct outbreak investigations
• Conduct analysis and formulate conclusions, identify occurrences, incubation periods, periods of communicability, modes of transmission, signs and symptoms, and susceptibility associated with the infectious disease process
• Assess the need for, develop and present or oversee presentation of IPCP related education for general orientation, annual and as needed in-services including, but not limited to, the following topics:
  • Hand Hygiene
  • Cleaning, disinfection, linen handling, and aseptic techniques during procedures
  • Specific practices in direct care and ancillary settings
  • Therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and devices
  • Use of isolation/barrier precautions when indicated
  • Resident placement, transfer and discharge
  • Environmental hazards
  • Use of patient care products and medical equipment
  • Resident immunization/vaccination programs
• Maintain Current Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations, ensure facility leaders are informed of appropriate issue; understand and comply with infection control safety and OSHA procedures and regulations.
• Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as necessary or as may be directed
• Coordinates the residents’ plan of care with the interdisciplinary team (IDT), physicians, medical personnel,  and resident’s family/responsible party;
• Accurately and completely performs direct nursing services, such as, medication administration, treatments, personal care and other nursing procedures as required
• Assures proper documentation including but not limited to: consents, summary notes, care plans, medication records, etc.
• Actively engages and participates in the community’s QAPI program;
• Facilitates on-going nursing care provided to all residents and includes residents in decision making processes;
